Refuse the Release of Wolbachia Mosquitoes in Bali & Indonesia!”
JAKARTASATU.COM— “Healthy Movement for the People” expresses deep concern regarding the Government’s program in the form of spreading Aedes Aegypti mosquito eggs which are exposed to Wolbachia bacteria in millions. The “Healthy Movement for the People” reminds the Government to immediately stop plans to release 200 million Wolbachia mosquitoes on the island of Bali on November 13 2023 and in 5 other cities in West Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Kupang and Bontang.
Concerns and demands were voiced jointly by the “Healthy Movement for the People”, a movement initiated by the Siti Fadilah Supari (SFS) Foundation, the Association of Indonesian Trade Unions (ASPEK Indonesia), and Gladiator Bangsa, in a press conference on Sunday, November 12 2023 at Grandhika Hotel, Jl Iskandarsyah, South Jakarta.
Present as a speaker at the press conference was DR dr. Siti Fadilah Supari, Sp.JP (K), Former Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Komjen. Pol. Drs. Dharma Pongrekun, SHMM, MH, Mirah Sumirat, SE (President of ASPEK Indonesia) and Dr. Ir. Kun Wardana Abyoto, MT.
This program to release hundreds of millions of Wolbachia mosquitoes in Indonesia carries severe risks, including:
Risks to Public Health and the Environment: There has been no comprehensive long-term study in Bali, West Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Kupang and Bontang so there are risks to public health and the environment, including Occupational Safety and Health (K3).
Threats to Tourism: The release of millions of mosquitoes has the potential to damage the tourism industry, as well as the local economy.
