The new president of the Brazilian first division club Palmeiras, Leila Pereira, has appealed to the club’s fans not to send her any more money.
“Please stop sending me money,” said Pereira at her first official press conference. “If you want to support the club, you have to register in our membership program.”
After her address and social security number were announced at her inauguration ceremony, she received money from countless fans via the PIX money transfer app, popular in Brazil.
“I received hundreds of PIXs,” said Pereira with a laugh. “It’s unbelievable. When I saw that, I thought at first that I was attacked by hackers. But which hackers send you money? I’ve never seen anything like it,” she said.
According to Pereira, the fans also have specific wishes about what should happen with their money. “The fans are sending me money to sign a new center forward. They even write in the comments who to sign. It’s unprecedented,” she said.
Pereira is the first woman president in the history of the current Copa Libertadores winner and has been in office for around a month.
