Calm night but snow on the way
The weather during the night to Thursday has been significantly calmer than the previous day. However, a new, albeit less intense, snowfall moves in during the day. That’s what SVT’s meteorologist Marcus Sjöstedt says.
– During the night, a new snowfall found its way over southern Sweden. It will move north over Götaland during the morning and forenoon.
Yesterday there were a lot of traffic problems, how does it look today?
– At the moment, it doesn’t look like there will be as much snowfall as yesterday, but it can still create problems in traffic.
Wednesday’s snow has melted in some places and caused slippage. A yellow warning for wind in combination with snow is issued over parts of Götaland.
– If you are going out in the morning in southern Sweden, you should be careful.

New snowfall on the way: “Up to a decimetre”
The last day’s snow storm has just passed – but now the snow is on its way over southern Sweden again.
For Thursday, a yellow warning has been issued for parts of West Sweden and Värmland. The warning for occasionally heavy snowfall and wind that can cause new problems in traffic applies from Thursday morning.
– We have several weather systems that are coming in, one now during the night that is starting to move up over Scania. It soon turns into rain, but when it comes up over Götaland, there can be a little over a decimeter of snow in combination with wind, says SVT’s meteorologist Åsa Rasmussen.

Trafikverket’s director general: “Not satisfied”
A stressful weather situation combined with a high load on the roads contributed to the last day’s chaos where plow trucks could not arrive, according to the Swedish Transport Administration’s director general Roberto Maiorana.
– It is clear that I am not happy when you get stuck in a queue and have to spend the night in the car. But we got up in early readiness and gathered our contractors as early as Monday evening, he says in SVT’s Aktuellt.
He adds that SMHI communicated both yellow and orange warnings.
– There needs to be interaction with authorities, but also that individual citizens take responsibility and find out what the conditions look like.
At the same time, he admits that the night plowing did not work.
– It has not done that because it has not been sufficient.
– We could certainly plow even more and have a car out on every hill, but we wouldn’t be able to finance that.

Vehicles remained standing on the Ölandsbron for three hours. According to the Swedish Transport Administration, it took a long time for the plow trucks to also stand in the queues.

– There is often a lack of rest areas and other places where truck drivers can stop in bad weather, says Mattias Hjort, research leader at VTI.

– The main reason why we had to pull out has been that people have been out driving with summer tires, says Melwin Johnsson, rescue worker in Kalmar.

The Minister: Too early to draw sharp conclusions
Infrastructure Minister Andreas Carlson (KD) held a press conference regarding the traffic chaos of the past day.
– At present, it is too early to draw any sharp conclusions about the incident. The acute operational phase has just ended.
According to Carlson, the affected roads are open again, but the traffic situation is still problematic. He urges the public to continue to heed weather warnings and listen to the authorities.
– Everyone has their own responsibility not to worsen the situation on our roads.
Anyone with summer tires must under no circumstances venture out where winter road conditions prevail.
The government has tasked the Swedish Transport Agency with investigating whether the permitted time for winter tires should be extended by two weeks in the spring.
The minister is also open to reviewing the fines for driving with bad tires so that the consequences, if you go out on the roads with bad tires or summer tires, will be tougher than they are today.

Here, Tiberius struggles – to get out of the snow

The snowy weather hit parts of the county on Tuesday. In the evening, several accidents occurred, mainly where trucks have spun around and blocked traffic.
– There are stops in several places in Jönköping and Östergötland counties. If you don’t have to go out, you shouldn’t. If you do it anyway, keep your distance. There will be problems and it doesn’t matter where you are going, says Johnny Gustavsson, press spokesperson at the police.
Long queues are reported from the E4 between Huskvarna and Gränna. The emergency services rushed out with tracked vehicles and four-wheelers to help people who were stuck. They also want to get rid of the “cork” and ensure that people get fluids, heat and possible medical care.
– Those who have a need can signal when we move in the queue with four-wheelers, says Göran Melin, deputy rescue manager.

Truck collided with three cars
In the late afternoon, a truck and three cars collided on the E4 south of Gränna, and the northbound lane had to be closed. According to the emergency services, seven people were involved and one was taken to hospital by ambulance.
– You should probably take care to go out in traffic, it will be noisy for a while, said Mats Pettersson at the police during the morning.
No serious personal injuries have been reported.
Accidents in the morning
The snowfall also affected the morning traffic with several accidents. On road 26/47 between Mullsjö and Jönköping, traffic was blocked after a truck trailer ended up over the road. Road 32 between Tranås and Aneby was also stopped after a truck trailer overturned into the ditch.
Orange warning
SMHI has issued an orange warning for Habo, Tranås and Aneby. Yellow warning applies in Jönköping, Nässjö and Eksjö.
According to SMHI, there may be 5-10 centimeters of snow, locally 10-20 centimeters. During the night to Wednesday, the snowfall moves away to the southeast.
