“Stop making codeine palatable to children” – Azzi Memo with appeal to the rap scene

Drugs

Like it or not, the subject of “drugs” is in a way anchored in the rap scene. In the meantime, the topic is dealt with in most rap songs, whether in Germany or internationally. There is often a fine line between rapping about drug use because it was part of one’s life – as Capital Bra once made clear in a statement – and glorifying harder substances.

Last year we saw that not every listener only perceives it in the context of rapeseed and can classify it correctly. At that time, a huge debate about drug glorification in the German rap scene sparked the public. Among other things, the well-known interview with Capital Bra, in which he speaks openly about his tilidine consumption and expressly advises his fans against all drugs, was made in this context.

One of the reasons for all the debates was social media such as Tik Tok. There several – apparently young – people boasted about the consumption and possession of harder substances, such as the opiate tilidine. Since 2017, the Tilidin prescriptions for adolescents have increased by a factor of 30 – the fact that some rappers talked about consumption in their texts was probably a big factor.

There has been a lot of clarity on the subject lately. In addition to Capital Bra, who took part in the Tilidin debate in an interview and expressly advised his fans not to abuse drugs of any kind, there were also other rappers who had publicly distanced themselves from their drug use.

There are also other trendy drugs that have dominated rap for decades. Codeine is one of them, even if well-known German rappers such as Bonez MC reported their negative experiences with it.

Nevertheless, there are always rappers who address the consumption of codeine in their texts and show in their Instagram or Snapchat stories how they prepare their mixes. Azzi Memo is now expressly against it and urges his rap colleagues to stop doing the “To make Codien (opiates) palatable to children and young people”.
