“Some KN95 masks may fit snugly and others are loose,” Caravanos said. “If we had one that fit the face, it would be as effective as the N95.”

Three-layer surgical masks came in second in the study by researchers at Duke University, and number one according to Caravanos. “Three-ply surgical masks are inexpensive, disposable, breathable and have multiple layers.”
In trials, this mask only spread 0-0.1 droplets when the wearer spoke.

Next up are double-layered cotton masks and those made with polypropylene fabric, which is commonly used as a filter in face masks.
In a Duke University study, both were able to reduce the number of bursts of normal conversation and were as effective as standard surgical masks.
