Mexico City. After the president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Norma Piña, opened a consultation against the judicial reform related to an appeal filed by judges and magistrates to challenge the constitutional amendment, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called on lawyers, judges and ministers this Friday to “act responsibly” and “stop affecting the Judiciary.”
López Obrador reiterated at his daily press conference at the National Palace that there is no legal basis to reverse a reform approved by the Legislature and pointed out that attempts to stop it from the Judiciary are arbitrary actions “to defend privileges without taking into account the Constitution.”
“It has already been said enough that there is no legal basis to stop a constitutional reform, because it is the exclusive power of the Legislative Branch, it is its reason for being if all the procedures established by the Constitution and the laws are followed. Not only lawyers should know this, but, and with more reason, the authorities,” said the president in response to questions on the subject.
“The only thing I would recommend is that they stop affecting the judiciary, which they continue to deteriorate,” he said.
“That is what ends up convincing those who had doubts, this completely arbitrary behavior, without legal basis, how they act to defend privileges without taking into account the Constitution, the laws, seeking to overstep their boundaries in something that does not concern them, that has nothing to do with a true rule of law,” he stressed.
“I hope they calm down and act responsibly,” he added.
