(CNN) A federal judge in Mexico City blocked the US extradition of Ovidio, son of alleged drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán aka “El Chapo,” to the US on Friday, a day after he was arrested to a massive operation in northern Mexico that left 29 dead. .
According to Televisa and other Mexican media, another federal judge later ordered Guzmán to be held 60 days in pre-trial detention for extradition purposes after a hearing at the Altiplano maximum security federal prison where he is being held.
At least 19 suspected gang members and 10 military personnel died in violent clashes in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa, after authorities arrested Guzmán, along with 21 others. There were no reports of civilian deaths or injuries.
The United States is seeking Guzman’s extradition for drug trafficking and has offered up to $5 million for information leading to the capture of the man it says is a “senior member” of the Sinaloa Cartel.
CNN has requested comment from Guzmán’s defense team, with no response at the time of writing.
Ovidio Guzmán had previously been arrested by federal authorities in October 2019, but was released on the orders of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to avoid further bloodshed.
