Stoltenberg: NATO countries will soon discuss increasing the level of their defense spending

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told the German news agency (dbi) that the countries of the alliance will discuss their defense spending target in the coming months, at a time when some countries are demanding to make the level of the two percent currently stipulated as a minimum spend.

“Some allies are very much in favor of converting the current 2% target to the minimum,” Stoltenberg said in an interview published on Tuesday, noting that he would chair negotiations to discuss the issue.

“We will meet, hold ministerial meetings and hold talks in capital cities,” Stoltenberg said.

According to the news agency, Stoltenberg did not name the countries calling for a more ambitious target.

Stoltenberg said he had tried to reach an agreement no later than the next regular summit of the alliance, to be held in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, on July 11-12.
