Welt Sunday.

– There is informal agreement among the alliance’s 30 member states that Stoltenberg should remain in the position of NATO Secretary General until April 2024, writes the German newspaper.

The information comes from several unnamed sources high up in diplomacy.

A formal decision will be made in the coming weeks, the newspaper continues.

But the message is met with the message that Stoltenberg has no intention of staying in office longer than this autumn.

– Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg’s mandate has been extended three times, and he has served for a total of almost nine years. The Secretary-General’s term expires in October this year, and he has no intention of seeking another extension of his mandate, says NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu to VG.

Stoltenberg was initially supposed to have resigned in March last year, but the period was extended by half a year. The reason was Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
