Stoltenberg: If Sweden joins NATO, NATO’s presence in the Baltic Sea will be strengthened

If Sweden decides to join NATO, it can count on an increased NATO presence in its vicinity and in the Baltic Sea, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

In an interview published on Thursday, Swedish radio SVT Stoltenberg expressed confidence that it would be possible to find guarantees for Sweden’s security in the transition period between applying for and joining NATO.

As soon as Sweden asks to join NATO and NATO begins the accession process, NATO has a strong political commitment to guaranteeing Sweden’s security, the alliance’s secretary general said.

This could take many forms, including an increased NATO presence around Sweden and in the Baltic Sea.

It has already been reported that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has prompted Sweden and Finland to seriously consider joining NATO.
