Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Jens Stoltenberg confirms the immutability of NATO’s position that the Alliance will not send troops and aircraft to Ukraine for a war with the Russian Federation.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, Stoltenberg said this at a press conference in Brussels on the eve of a meeting of foreign ministers of the Alliance member states.

“We will discuss at the meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers tomorrow and the day after tomorrow what else we can do, and I look forward to a discussion on how to provide further military support, what type of system, how we can create conditions for Ukrainians to oppose the invading Russian forces,” he said. Stoltenberg.

He added that the support that has already been given to Ukraine has a clear impact, as Ukrainian troops were able to stop a lot of Russian armored vehicles and Ukrainians in several places were able to defeat Russian troops and forced the Russians to change their plans for the war as they retreated from Kyiv.

“We will consider what more we can do, but at the same time, Allies agree that we should not send NATO troops to Ukraine, and we should not send NATO aircraft into Ukrainian airspace, because we too have a responsibility to prevent war between Russia and NATO. This will lead to more deaths, more destruction and even more danger,” Stoltenberg said.

As UNIAN reported, on April 2 WSJ releases details of talks EU, Kyiv and Moscow before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In particular, a few days before the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz took the last step to normalize relations between Moscow and Kiev.

On Feb. 19, Scholz told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Munich that Ukraine should withdraw its Euro-Atlantic aspirations, abandon NATO membership and declare neutrality under a broad European Security Treaty between the West and Russia.

The Alliance itself has repeatedly emphasized that the doors are open for Ukraine, but there is no talk of the prospect of membership in the coming years.

In 2008, at the Bucharest summit, Germany and France blocked Ukraine’s membership in NATO. The other day, ex-Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel said that she still thinks it’s the right decision.
