Stoltenberg commented on sending Russian military doctors to help Italy – Society

BRUSSELS, April 1. / TASS /. All countries should help each other in the context of the international epidemiological crisis. This position was made by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at a video conference in Brussels on Wednesday, answering the question about the alliance’s attitude to sending Russian military doctors to Italy’s aid.

“In the context of the international crisis, all countries must help each other,” said the NATO Secretary General. “This is exactly what NATO states are doing now.” “Each country of the alliance independently decides what kind of assistance it seeks and accepts,” he added.

Stoltenberg also listed several examples of NATO countries helping each other in the fight against the pandemic, including sending medical equipment on military aircraft from Turkey to Spain and Italy on Wednesday, as well as sending doctors to these countries and Eastern European NATO countries.

On March 21, during a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, it was agreed that Moscow would provide Rome with the necessary assistance in the fight against coronavirus. From the evening of March 22 to the morning of March 25, 15 planes arrived in Italy, which brought about 100 Russian military virologists and experts of the Ministry of Defense in the field of epidemiology, eight medical and nursing teams, as well as equipment for diagnosis and disinfection. Russian military experts arrived on Wednesday in the city of Bergamo (Lombardy region) – one of the worst affected by the pandemic.

At present, Russian medical and nursing teams, together with Italian colleagues, have begun to equip intensive care units in a hospital created in Bergamo to treat patients infected with coronavirus infection.
