New York – Authorities are urging caution in Nassau County on Long Island due to an increase in car thefts at gas stations when people leave their keys inside a car while refueling.
One of the cases occurred at around 2.45pm on Monday when a 60-year-old woman was standing next to her vehicle at the gas station, located in 91 West Jericho Highway, in Mineola, when a suspect got into his car and fled, police said. Inside the vehicle, a Range Rovers white, there was the victim’s purse containing several credit cards, but there was also something more precious: her little dog Cavachon Bichon 1 year old white
A short time later, near Jericho Turnpike yes Avenue Minéolathe subject allegedly attempted to throw the dog out of the vehicle, but the collar got snagged and the dog was dragged across the road, police said.
The dog was finally able to break free as the wagon was moving west Jericho Turnpike. A passerby managed to help the dog and called 9-1-1.
The dog was transported with police to a nearby veterinary hospital and was treated for serious injuries. His master was not injured.
The car Range Rovers white was later found parked out front 500 North Walnut Street in East Orange, New Jersey.
The alleged robber was described as being of slight build and at the time of the robbery he was wearing gray sweatpants, a black hoodie, white/black/grey trainers, black gloves and a black balaclava.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the above incident to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
They also recommend that residents take the following measures when refueling in their cars:
- Lock the car and take the keys with you while you refuel.
- Do not leave your car running at the service station
