Stockholm wants the Chinese ship to be moved to Swedish waters

Sweden wants a Chinese ship suspected of breaking two communication cables in the Baltic Sea and currently anchored off the coast of Denmark to be moved to Swedish waters to facilitate an investigation , Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson said on Tuesday.

Sweden has “communicated with the ship and China and said that we want the ship to proceed to Swedish waters,” the Prime Minister said at a press conference this morning.

It’s not an “indictment,” but the purpose of the subpoena is to “find out what happened,” Christerson said.

In Swedish territorial waters in the Baltic Sea on November 17 and 18, two telecommunications cables were broken – between Finland and Germany and between Sweden and Lithuania.

According to ship tracking websites, the Yi Peng 3 was sailing over the cables around the time of the downing, although there is no indication that it was involved in the events.

Police in Sweden and Finland have launched an investigation, but European officials have announced that they suspect sabotage related to Russia’s attack on Ukraine.

The ship “Yi Peng 3” has been anchored in the narrow Kattegat strait between Sweden and Denmark since last Tuesday.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied any responsibility in the matter.

The Danish navy said on Wednesday that it was monitoring the ship in international waters. On Saturday, the Swedish Coast Guard joined him.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, tensions in the Baltic Sea have risen.

In September 2022, explosions damaged the Nord Stream gas pipeline connecting Russia and Germany.

On the other hand, in October 2023, the underwater gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia was closed after it was damaged by the anchor of a Chinese cargo ship.
