Stockholm is the first major capital to ban petrol and diesel cars from the center. The Swedish capital wants to reduce pollution and noise. From 2025, only electric cars will be allowed into the city center.
The environmental zone applies to twenty blocks in central Stockholm. This includes areas with luxury shopping streets and some of the most expensive office buildings in Sweden. The city will decide at the beginning of 2025 whether the environmental zone will be expanded.
“The air in Stockholm causes babies to develop lung diseases and the elderly to die earlier. It is a completely unacceptable situation,” said Lars Stromgren, who deals with traffic on behalf of the municipality. “That’s why we’re introducing the most ambitious low-emission zone yet.”
A number of other cities are also working to tackle air pollution, but no city is going as far as Stockholm. For example, only diesel cars are banned in Paris, Athens and Madrid. In London, a levy must be paid for the most polluting cars.
There are still a few exceptions in Stockholm. Hybrid vans are also allowed for the time being. There is also an exception for ambulances, police cars and vehicles with an occupant with a valid disability card.
