Those of you who have followed the development of information technology over the past year, it seems that you are already familiar with headlines that point to conditions such as “semiconductor limitations” or “scarcity of chipsets” which are still coloring many industries today. One of the industries that was affected was video games which was even enough to make Sony end up missing its Playstation 5 sales target in the 2021 fiscal year yesterday. This situation is also inevitably reflected in the financial reports of another video game company – Nintendo.
Still coming with fantastic data, Nintendo managed to sell around 23 million Nintendo Switch units in the last fiscal year, bringing its total sales now at 107.65 million units. Nevertheless, the figure continued to record a decline of 20% compared to the previous fiscal year. Nintendo cited the limitations of semiconductors and other parts as a source of the problem, apart from the fact that sales had skyrocketed the previous year thanks to the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
In contrast to Sony, which is optimistic that conditions will improve in the current fiscal year, Nintendo comes with a cautious prediction. They target that there will be 21 million Nintendo Switch units and 210 million game copies sold. How about you? Already have a Switch by now?
