Stjepan Tomas, who played football and coached in Turkey for many years, left the sheriff.
In a statement released on the Moldovan club’s Twitter account, it was claimed that Tomas resigned voluntarily.
The sheriff lost 1-0 away to Petrocub in the league over the weekend. Stjepan Tomas is said to have taken responsibility for the team he lost for the first time in 12 weeks in the league and resigned.
In his post-match statement, Tomas said: “Apparently the players were thinking about the Manchester game. There was no concentration. It’s my fault” and resigned.
The sheriff, who tops the table with 27 points at the end of 12 weeks, is followed by Petrocub with 21 points.
The Moldovan side, which are part of the same group as Manchester United, Omonia Nicosia and Real Sociedad in the UEFA Europa League, are in third place with 3 points. The Sheriff will host Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Previously Tomas worked as an assistant coach in Gaziantepspor, Sivasspor, Göztepe, Akhisarspor, Çaykur Rizespor and Başakşehir in Turkey. The 46-year-old Croatian coach also coached Antalyaspor, Rizespor and Göztepe.
