Owners of a Segway, Stint or electric scooter can continue to drive around on their means of transport without a license plate at this time. Due to the strong debate about possible regulations for fat bikes, the government is again postponing the introduction of the registration requirement for special mopeds called.

The entry of this measure will be ‘delayed until July 1, 2025′, writes Minister Barry Madlener (Directorate of Infrastructure and Water, PVV) to the House of Representatives. Changing or introducing new rules usually happens twice a year: on 1 January or 1 July.

One year old plan

The license plate requirement for Segways, e-scooters and stints – now known as the BSO bus – came to an end announced a year ago by the minister at the time Mark Harbers. The plan was to introduce this in July this year. That didn’t work, it became clear in the middle of April.

There were concerns about the size of the license plate. Because of its width, it would stick out on an electric scooter. As a solution, they would be made smaller, but this would first have to be investigated if these smaller license plates could be provided with security features. And would they still be easy to read.

What’s the difference?

Other objections arose after the plan was published. Among other things, that enforcement would be problematic due to too few police officers. And why do electric scooters need a license plate, if electric bikes don’t? Overregulation was a criticism.

Reason enough to postpone the introduction until January 1 next year. That will never be achieved. The reason is the intense debate about fat bikes. There should be rules for this too, recently the House of Representatives ruled. Madlener wants to look at these rules and measures for fat bikes ‘in a wider context’.

Even after July 1, owners of Segways, stints and e-scooters do not have to worry about being illegal without a license plate. There will be a transition period of one year. During that time, people who already have a means of transport must inform the National Road Transport Agency (RDW).

Not free

Then the e-scooter, stint or segway will be registered in their name and will cost 18 euros. The license plate costs another 25 euros. After the transfer period, you can buy a new copy for 28 euros.
