British singer Sting on Thursday predicted a “battle” by artists to defend their works against the use of artificial intelligence in the music industry.
The 71-year-old former Police singer argued in a BBC interview that “the building blocks of music belong to us human beings. There is going to be a battle that we all have to fight in the next few years: defending our human capital against AI”.
The process is used to recreate works by renowned musicians. Fake works by artists like Eminem, Drake, The Weeknd or Oasis have been created using artificial intelligence.
“The tools are useful, but it’s up to us to wield them,” Sting said, “you can’t let the machines take over, you have to be careful.”
“Maybe for electronic music it works. But for the songs, which express emotions, I don’t think I would be moved,” he added.
The Police singer was speaking as he is due to receive the Ivors music academy’s highest award on Thursday.
