Still water compensation for Limburg farmers in floodplains

Farms in Limburg with activities in the floodplains of the river Maas are still covered by the government’s water damage scheme. This is reported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, which is currently working out the water damage schemes.

The farmers previously threatened to be excluded from compensation for the damage suffered as a result of the flooding, because the floodplains are not intended for renovation but as water storage for the river during high water.

Outside the winter months, hundreds of farmers along the Meuse use the land for growing potatoes and maize, for example, and for grassland and hay meadows. The farmers argue that no distinction should be made between damage inside and outside the dike.

The agricultural and horticultural organization LTO had already received more than 200 reports of damage, for an estimated 2.3 million euros. It is possible that more farmers will now apply for the broader water damage scheme, thinks LTO.
