Still restless on Lesvos, child drowned in the sea NOW

A child drowned on Monday in the Aegean Sea off the Greek island of Lesbos when a boat capsized. The Greek authorities report this. It is the first to die since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan opened the border with Europe and thousands of refugees tried to reach the border with Europe.

The Greek police reported on Monday that on Sunday morning at least a thousand migrants had reached the East Aegean islands of Greece. In total, more than 10,000 refugees have tried to cross land at the border.

On the islands of Lesvos and Chios, dozens of people were previously injured in battles between residents of the islands and the Greek police. The Greek government plans to build new camps where asylum seekers can stay. Residents have also blocked the roads to Moria refugee camp on Lesvos. Islanders also pushed a boat with refugees away, which prevented them from docking.

The Red Cross reports that a team traveled directly from the Turkish Red Crescent to the islands last Friday. According to the aid organization, there was indeed a sharp increase in the number of refugees there. Hot meals, water and winter clothing are currently being distributed.

Erdogan’s decision to open the border with Europe seems to be putting pressure on the European Union not to remain aloof in the conflict in the Syrian province of Idlib. A bombing was carried out there on Thursday, killing 33 Turkish soldiers.
