Still Rare in the Market, Sony is Ready to Boost PlayStation 5 Production

TRIBUNNEWS.COM – Since its initial launch in 2020, the latest generation of game consoles from Sony, namely the PlayStation 5 (PS5), has been difficult to find on the market.

This is due to demand that is not comparable to the stock PS5 that Sony has prepared. However, this PS5 scarcity seems to be ending in the near future.

Because the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Jim Ryan promised to increase PS5 production in the near future.

He did not reveal the number of additions to the PS4 successor in detail. What is clear, the number of additions will be more than before.

“We plan to increase our game console (PS5) production figure to a number that we have never achieved before,” Ryan said in a statement to investors, quoted by KompasTekno from Gizmodo, Sunday (29/5/2022).

In its latest financial report for the fourth quarter of the 2021 financial year (FY21), Sony itself revealed that it had successfully sold around 2 million PS5 units, down from 3.3 million units in the same period last year.

With this addition, the total PS5 sold since its launch is around 19.3 million units, consisting of 11.5 million units in FY21 and 7.8 million units in FY20.

Returning to the decline in sales earlier, this, Ryan continued, was not caused by declining PS5 demand, but because of the scarcity of hardware components that hit the world, as an effect of the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, as mentioned above, Ryan is optimistic that his party can increase PS5 production by securing the supply of components to assemble the game console in the near future.

This can be achieved by finding more and more varied component suppliers, instead of relying on existing component suppliers.

That way, the PS5 production process will not be disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic or the Russian invasion of Ukraine which has an impact on many sectors.
