In the United States, New York, the economic heart of the country, will remain confined until at least May 28. The pandemic killed more than 20,000 out of the 87,000 in the United States, the first country affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The “Big Apple” is still far from fulfilling the necessary criteria to begin deconfinement: in other words the continued decline in hospitalizations, the number of people in intensive care and positive tests for Covid-19. The daily death toll has certainly fallen sharply. It is now less than 200 and ambulance sirens are rarer.
A summer under the sign of the Covid-19
Yet New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is playing it safe. “It’s going to be a very different summer compared to anything we’ve seen in New York history,” he warned. “All the things we love to do in the summer like barbecues, picnics, playing ball or going to the beach: all of those things are going to be different,” he explained. “There are a lot of things you want to do that you can’t do yet.”
It is impossible for the moment to know when the restaurants, shops or theaters that make up the identity of the city will reopen. New York, usually hyperactive, is surrealistically calm without its millions of tourists. No indication was given on the reopening of schools. In contrast, state beaches will be open from next weekend, with physical distancing obligations.
