JAKARTA – Professor of Nutrition Science FEMA IPB, Prof. dr. Hardiansyah revealed that stunting and obesity under five is still a major problem faced by the government.

The reason is, this nutritional problem has an impact on the nation’s future generations.

Prof. Hardiansyah said there are proven foods prevent stunting when pregnant women. Some of them are milk, eggs, fish, animal foods, and side dishes.

“Then the foods that are proven to prevent stunting after the baby is born are exclusive breastfeeding, growth milk, eggs, fish, animal foods, side dishes, and various nutritionally enriched complementary foods,” explained Prof. Hardiansyah during the 62nd National Nutrition Day Commemoration Media Gathering themed Joint Action to Prevent Stunting and Obesity, Tuesday (18/1/2022).

Furthermore, he stated that providing adequate breast milk (ASI) and complementary foods (MPASI) is the best choice to fulfill nutritional intake for children. Exclusive breastfeeding for up to 6 months, followed by complementary feeding for 6-23 months.

“Give enough and good complementary foods at the age of 6-23 months. Take care of the health of babies and children through immunization, hygiene, stimulation, good habits of eating vegetables, fruit, side dishes, and high protein,” he said.

Associated with the problem of obesity, it is better for parents to understand the main causes of obesity or overweight. Obesity is not only caused by lack of physical activity and food, but many causes.

Prof. Hardiansyah explained that in adults or adolescents obesity can occur due to stress that causes inflammation.

This inflammation causes the accumulation of fat. In addition, lack of sleep or excess sleep that increases the hormone ghrelin can lead to hunger.

“Start by managing the main causative factors such as stress, don’t get stressed, you have to increase physical activity and regulate sleep, monitor body weight and waist circumference,” he concluded.
