“Stiftung Warentest Study Ranks Red Nail Polishes for Durability and Harmful Substances”

Berlin (dpa / tmn) – Red nail polish on the fingernails is an eye-catcher. But how long it stays there is not necessarily a question of price. This is shown by a study by Stiftung Warentest, which examined 20 red nail polishes in its “test” magazine (issue 05/23) – including for durability, consistency and possible harmful substances.

The place of the test winner is shared by the most expensive nail polish in the test, the nail polish “Dior Vernis” in the color “Rouge 999” for 15.50 euros per 5 milliliters, and the much cheaper nail polish from “Essie” in the color “60 Really Red”. ” for 3.70 euros per 5 milliliters. “The nails painted with them last up to five days of work, household and sports,” said the testers. Overall, their verdict was: seven times “good”, twelve times “satisfactory”, a nail polish gets the grade “sufficient”.

Points deducted for increased nitrosamine levels

Points were deducted for paints that could not meet the manufacturer’s specifications for durability on the nails. Also: for poor drying and discoloration of the nails after varnishing. Missing lists of ingredients on the packaging and ingredients not specified also had a negative impact. Seven paints attracted negative attention due to increased nitrosamine levels.

Nitrosamines are considered carcinogenic. At most, the European cosmetics regulation tolerates traces that are technically unavoidable during production. However, some of the findings of the product testers were above the guideline values that the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety specifies as acceptable for certain nitrosamines.

The testers do not see any relevant health risks in the determined levels, but according to them suppliers should control their products more strictly.
