Huub Stevens expects that he will not return to the bench at Schalke 04. Under the leadership of the interim coach, the fourth victory of 2020 was booked on Wednesday: 1-3 against the small SSV Ulm in the cup tournament.
“Just assume that this was my last game. I hope they have found a new trainer in the meantime, otherwise I have to renew my trainer’s license again,” Stevens said after the game with a wink.
The 67-year-old Limburger is considered the club icon of Schalke, of which he is the most successful trainer ever. This year, partly due to financial problems, the club has lost its way completely and there was hardly any winning with bad football.
The performance led to the resignation of successively trainers David Wagner and Manuel Baum, after which Stevens was appointed for the last two games of the calendar year. Against Arminia Bielefeld, they lost 0-1 on Saturday, but there was a win against Ulm.
Swiss Christian Gross is said to be a prime candidate to become Schalke’s trainer. “I’ve had some impressions in the past week, so if asked, I’ll give my opinion internally about a possible new trainer,” said Stevens of his successor.
Schalke’s next game will be on January 2, when the Bundesliga last week will visit Hertha BSC.
