The corona figures continue to fall unabated. The number of hospital admissions is already even lower than before the second wave. “By the end of this week we could be below an average of 75 new admissions per day,” said Steven Van Gucht.

Virologist Steven Van Gucht sees that the corona figures continue to go in the right direction. That is the proof that the vaccination campaign is doing its job. “The corona figures continue to fall convincingly. There is currently no mention of a delay. An encouraging evolution that makes you dream of further relaxation. One in two adults has now had a first vaccination and almost one in four a second. That’s certainly good news, but let’s not forget that half of adults are still unvaccinated and more than three quarters of adults are only half vaccinated. Protection against the virus is only optimal after two injections, except for the Janssen vaccine, where one injection is sufficient.”

Respect for measures in public space
«This optimal protection is necessary, in particular for deviating variants, such as the South African and the Indian variant. That is why respect for hygiene and distance rules in public space is still important. Just think of wearing mouth masks in the store or on public transport. Even people who have not yet had the chance to be vaccinated should be able to safely go out in public spaces,” he explained during Sciensano’s press conference.

Under 75 admissions per day
The infections as well as the hospital figures and the number of deaths continue to fall. Hospital numbers are now lower than for the second wave in September. «In the past week, an average of 1,766 infections per day were detected. That is a sharp decrease of 27 percent on a weekly basis. The number of hospital admissions also continues to decline. In the past week, there were an average of 84 new admissions per day. That is 27 percent less than the week before. With this, hospital admissions are halved every 15 days, which means that by the end of this week we can already fall below an average of 75 new admissions per day. It has also been since the end of September, so before the second wave, that we have seen such low hospital figures.

Fewer than 400 corona patients in intensive care
There are also fewer and fewer corona patients in intensive care. By mid-June we may be below 300 patients. «Total hospital occupancy is also continuing to fall and the pace has even increased slightly. There are currently 1,232 corona patients in Belgian hospitals, 438 of which are in intensive care. These figures are therefore about 20 percent lower than the previous week. At this rate, we could have less than 400 patients in intensive care by early next week and even less than 300 by mid-June. On average, there were 13 deaths per day in the past week. That is a decrease of 32 percent,” he concludes.
