At the luncheon as well as a photo shoot with the 2023 Oscar nominees, Tom Cruise had a chat with Steven Spielberg. Both compete in the Best Picture nomination, but there is no visible aura of competition between them.
Steven with his The Fableman and Tom with Top Gun: Maverick, both gained praise from many filmmakers and film critics. Although for matters of financial income, Top Gun far outperforms the film.
Realizing this, Steven Spielberg praised the film.
“You saved Hollywood and you probably saved cinema distribution too,” he said, which made Tom Cruise blush.
“Seriously, Top Gun: Maverick has probably saved the entire film industry,” he added.
Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg previously worked together on the films Minority Report (2002) and War of the Worlds (2005). Minority Report has become one of the best sci-fi films to date and was serialized in 2015 but was discontinued after one season.
Top Gun: Maverick is the film that has grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office amid the pandemic along with Spider-Man: No Way Home. With a gross of $1.48 billion, Maverick is ranked as the 11th highest-grossing film in history worldwide (not adjusted for inflation). This film is the fifth highest-grossing film at the domestic box office with 718 million USD.
As Variety reports, Tom Cruise is the most anticipated figure in the Luncheon nominations. Spielberg isn’t the only one with a crush on the Maverick star. Brendan Gleeson, Paul Mescal, Baz Luhrmann, Michelle Yeoh, Austin Butler and others made sure to approach Cruise during the event and photoshoot.
Top: Gun Maverick earned six Oscar nominations, while The Fablemans had just one more. The 2023 Oscars air March 12 on ABC.
