Steven Lectrr Degryse wins the “European cartoon award” 2024 and Victor Solís and Tjeerd Royaards finalists

The caricatures of the two finalists Víctor Solís (published in EFEverde.com) and Tjeerd Royaards (published in the Dutch media Trouw) respectively address plastic pollution in the seas and the protests of farmers in Europe to lower the environmental demands of the Common Agricultural Policy.

For Emanuele Del Rosso, deputy director of the European Cartoon Prize, “this year’s winning cartoon shows us freedom of expression, embodied in the figure of Alexei Navalny. The drawing shows a body in the warehouse, with its mouth closed with stitches, representing the free voice of Russian citizens. It is a striking metaphor that applies to so many other countries. The caricatures of Solis y royard They address, instead, a very pressing problem: the environment and how we treat it, and the need to take the necessary measures to fight pollution and climate change. I find these three caricatures to be extremely powerful.”

The winning works were selected from among 16 nominees, who were selected from almost 400 works in the press from more than 24 countries.

Honorable mentions

The jury decided to award two Honorable Mentions, to Elena Ospina and Peter Kuper, for cartoons published in the French newspapers Le Monde and Charlie Hebdo.
