Steven Gerrard should make Al-Ettifaq a top team in the Saudi Pro League. But the Liverpool legend is now under enormous pressure.
Is Gerrard’s time at Al-Ettifaq coming to an end?
The 2023 calendar year ended with a 1-1 draw against Al Hazm for the Saudi first division club Al-Ettifaq. The division of points meant the team’s eighth game without a win Steven Gerrard (43) in the Saudi Pro League in a row, which caused the team to fall into the middle of the league. This means that the English coach, who had previously coached Glasgow Rangers and Aston Villa, is according to information from the Telegraph under enormous pressure.
Those responsible at Al-Ettifaq had great expectations after Gerrard was signed in the summer. The club also signed well-known names like Moussa Dembele and Georginio Wijnaldum and wanted to attack in the Saudi Pro League. After a promising start to the season, things are now anything but smooth and the team has been without a win for two months.

Gerrard explained shortly before Christmas that they needed to make some changes to the squad and become active in the transfer market. “We have to show in this window and also in the summer that we are serious and that we want to be competitive at the top of the league and not where we are at the moment,” explained the former Liverpool captain. “The message we have conveyed is that we have to be aggressive and ruthless and that we have to make a lot of changes to make the team more competitive,” he added of a conversation at the end of the calendar year.
In the recent past, the club had shown that they were not particularly sensitive to unsuccessful coaches. His predecessor Antonio Cazorla was fired after just four months. Before that, Patrice Carteron had been in office for less than a year. Given eighth place and 25 points from 19 games, the pressure on Gerrard is increasing.
