Steven Bergwijn has been the captain of Ajax since last summer and so he went through a dark period in Amsterdam as captain. This winter he has been linked several times with a departure from the Johan Cruijff ArenA. West Ham United and Bayern Munich are said to have him on their radar, but Bergwijn himself knows nothing about it.

“I have a contract until 2027, so that makes sense,” Bergwijn responds to a question Football International whether he will still play for Ajax next year. “But of course: in football you never know what can happen. I’m only 26, so of course you keep all options open. One day I would like to play in the Premier League again, I think that remains the best competition. I also had a very nice time there, at Tottenham.”
Bergwijn still dreams of playing in England. That possibility seemed to be there with the extensive interest from West Ham United, but according to the captain himself, it was not too bad. “Now I just play everything, at Ajax. I now assume that this will also be the case after the summer. Of course I have also read about interest from West Ham United, but as far as I know, nothing is happening.”

When it comes to transfers, Bergwijn naturally experienced a lot during the turbulent transfer summer at Ajax. “It was a bizarre summer. Twelve new players came from all over, I had never experienced that before, I don’t know if that has ever happened anywhere else. Normally there are two or three new players in the summer, but now it was twelve. Now those boys also know what Ajax means, where the standard is, what is expected.”
