Steven Berghuis thinks VAR Ingmar Oostrom’s decision not to award Ajax a goal is justified, as he said in front of the ESPN camera after the lost match against SC Heerenveen (3-2). The attacker of the team from Amsterdam tells his story in a remarkably subdued manner after a disappointing match, concludes analyst Kees Kwakman.
The Amsterdam team claimed an own goal from Sven van Beek in the very last minute, deep in injury time. After long deliberation, VAR Ingmar Oostrom decided that the ball had not completely crossed the line.
Afterwards, Berghuis indicates that he understands the arbitration decision. “There is no goal-line technology and if the evidence is lacking then the referee cannot approve it. It is incredibly difficult to watch.”
“If you see the ball like this and you don’t have goal-line technology, I can imagine that they are not 100 percent sure whether the ball has crossed the line. We just have to accept this, no matter how difficult it is.”
“This really happened at the last minute,” Berghuis continues. “We could have left here with a point, but unfortunately this is also football. I don’t know whether we would have deserved a point.”
“At times we deserved to get more, but we also had weak moments both offensively and defensively,” said the occasional captain. “With the free kicks from Sosa and Hlynsson in the first half, we had moments when we were able to get back into the match, but we must also give credit to Heerenveen.”
Afterwards, Kwakman concludes that Berghuis reacts in a remarkably subdued manner. “I have the feeling that he is secretly holding back. Secretly he knows where it went wrong, but maybe he is keeping quiet now because he is captain.”
