Sterk og Stødig: Group Training for Seniors to Improve Balance and Strength

The physiotherapy service (Activity and Mastery department organized under the Health Center in Halden municipality) runs a training service for seniors called Sterk og Stødig. It is a national concept that has been developed over many years and is now maintained by the National Center for Aging and Health.

Strong and steady is group training with a focus on balance and strength, adapted to seniors (65+) who experience unsteadiness and incipient functional impairment. The groups are led by volunteer instructors who have attended courses and become approved Sterk og Stødig instructors.

The volunteer instructors are supervised by physiotherapists who are certified Sterk og Stødig supervisors through Aldring og Helse.

Exercise that emphasizes muscle strength, balance and coordination helps to reduce the risk of falls and falls in elderly people living at home. It is therefore important to create meeting places in the local environment for activity, participation and social community. Sterk og Stødig is an example of such a health-promoting and preventive measure in the local environment. (taken from Aging and Health).

In Halden, we have had Sterk og Stødig since the winter of 2020. A few weeks after the first group training at Folkets Hus, the country was closed down as a result of the pandemic and it was therefore a different start for the new preventive offer. After we were again given the opportunity to start up again, the offer has been developed and several Halden residents have attended courses to become instructors.

Several of the physiotherapists in the municipality have also become certified supervisors, so that Halden can now arrange courses for instructors in our own municipality. Previously, volunteers had to travel to Sarpsborg for courses there.

As of today, we have three active instructors and two groups are held a week at Folkets Hus, one on Mondays and one on Tuesdays. The aim is to be able to start more groups in the long term, so that even more people can take part in training. In order to achieve this, we need to get in touch with people who think this sounds exciting and who would like to lead a group training session for seniors. A new course is planned for new volunteers in the late summer.

The relevant dates are 23 and 24 August + 31 August. and the course is held at Halden Health Centre. If you are interested in being a volunteer or have questions about the course; contact physiotherapist Martine Andreassen at mob. 93243184 or by email: [email protected].

The last group training before the holidays was held on Tuesday this week. Volunteers and instructors now have a break until the groups start up again in September.
