Sterilization is recommended from the age of 38

Santo Domingo.- In the segment La Consulta, Dr. Liliam Fondeur answers viewers’ questions about gynecology and relationships. On this occasion, addressed the issue of early sterilization.

The doctor explained that sterilization consists of a procedure that generally involves cutting and tying the tubes separately, achieving 99.99 percent effectiveness. Although tubes can sometimes rejoin, Fondeur said it’s highly unlikely.

She also said that every woman has the right to opt for sterilization if she so desires. However, she also stressed that women should be informed about current scientific advances, such as insemination and in vitro fertilization.

In the Dominican Republic, the average age for sterilization is 27. However, Fondeur said that during that time, many women can change their mind or change their partner, which could lead them to reconsider their decision.

She therefore called on women to think twice before resorting to sterilisation as a contraceptive method, especially if they are under 30 years of age, noting that there are other contraceptive methods available.

The doctor explained that in developed countries, in vitro fertilization is covered by health systems, and is performed from the age of 35 or 38, when a woman is less likely to change her mind about having children.

“There are many contraceptive methods, in developed countries that cover in vitro fertilization they sterilize you after the age of 35 or 38 because at that age it is likely that people will not change their mind,” she said.

Physiological sequelae

According to the doctor, there are no after-effects of organic sterilization.

However, she said that women who undergo this procedure at an early age experience changes, such as menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea), alterations in the menstrual cycle, and even a decrease in sexual desire.

However, she said that those who are sterilized too early begin to experience menstrual pain, which is called dysmenorrhea, an alteration in the menstrual cycle, and even a decrease in sexual desire.

“If a woman is sterilized at 38 or 39 years old, what she wants as a woman is probably already built, but before the age of 40, most women in the Dominican Republic do not,” she said.
