“We will increase our presence in Europe, with our NATO allies, and there will be a price to pay for that.” Reuters, Saturday (1/1/2022).
Biden said Putin agreed to “three major conferences” next month with senior staff to help find a resolution. He hoped there would be progress from the negotiations.
“[Namun], I explained that it could only work if he de-escalated,” he said.
Asked if Moscow faced sanctions if it kept troops on the Russia-Ukraine border, Biden said, “I’m not going to negotiate here in public, but we made it clear that he can’t, can’t, move in Ukraine.”
A White House official said Biden would speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday Washington time or Saturday (1/1/2022) WIB.
According to the official, Biden will reaffirm support for Ukraine, discuss Russia’s military buildup and review preparations for diplomatic efforts to calm the situation in the region.
