Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Stephen Hawking’s most famous theory about black holes has just received a chilling update.

In 1974, Hawking said that black holes will eventually evaporate due to radiation loss. This radiation was later named ‘Hawking Radiation’.

Technically, Hawking Radiation drains the black hole’s energy gradually in the form of light particles that appear around the hole’s gravitational field.

Now, the theory update shows that Hawking Radiation is not only created by sucking up energy in black holes. Radiation can also be formed from all objects that have enough mass.

If this theory is correct, it means that everything in the universe will eventually disappear as energy is slowly sucked out.

“That means that objects without an event horizon, such as the remains of dead stars and other massive objects in the universe, also have a similar type of radiation to black holes,” said lead author Heino Falcke, a professor of astrophysics at Radboud University in the Netherlands, quoted from Live ScienceFriday (9/6/2023).

“After a very long period of time, that radiation will cause everything in the universe to eventually evaporate, like a black hole. This will change not only our understanding of Hawking Radiation, but also our view of the universe and its future.” he added.

The researchers published their findings on June 2 in the journal Physical Review Letters.
