Stephanie’s Profile: From knowing little English to succeeding at CityLab

When Stephanie Jiménez, a student of 10O degree at CityLab High School, she moved to America just two years ago, she only knew a word of English.

Jiménez was determined to get the education she wanted, and after visiting several schools, she enrolled in CityLab, a Dallas ISD school of transformation. In two years, Jiménez not only learned English from her bilingual peers and teachers who helped her learn it at her own pace, but the school also helped her develop her passion for art.

“CityLab is a great school; it’s full of amazing, talented people, ”Jiménez said. “CityLab inspires me every day.”

Located in downtown Dallas, CityLab offers a unique high school experience in an open concept building and a vision for youth to take advantage of the city as a unique classroom. Programs include architecture, environmental science, and urban and regional planning.

Jiménez has opted for virtual learning during the pandemic and, despite the challenges, continues to praise his teachers.

“My teachers take the time to explain the lessons,” he shared. “They look for pictures, examples and additional tasks so that we can continue learning.”

Jiménez looks forward to returning to face-to-face classes and appreciates the opportunity to attend a school where most of his learning comes from exploring the city and the outside world. Moving forward, Jiménez plans to pursue a career in urban planning while making time for his new passion, art.

“CityLab is like a family,” Jiménez said. “There you can discover the profession for you and the perfect university so that you know well what you want for your future.”
