At the time of her trial on April 26, 2023, a year after the events, Stephanie Melgoza was appearing before a court in illinois. Formally admitting the facts, she pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated drunk driving and two counts of aggravated dangerous driving.

Sentenced to 14 years in prison the next day, the young woman expressed her remorse: “I am really sorry and I will never do such a thing again. I haven’t had a drink since the day of the tragedy, and I will never drink again. I want to try to do something positive to change things, to talk about this case and to warn others about the dangers of alcohol,” she said.
