One of the two Stellar sea eagles that escaped from the cage of the Labiomista park on March 24 was seen in Lommel on Saturday. The animal has also been spotted in other municipalities.
Today it is a month ago that the two sea eagles escaped in the park of artist Koen Vanmechelen. A construction error in the cage suddenly created a large opening that allowed the duo to fly into freedom. One of the two animals was initially spotted at a fish pond in As and later also in Zutendaal, Genk and Peer.
In the meantime, presumably the same bird has flown to the north where it sought some peace on the roof of a house in Lommel. It is there that neighbors have seen the animal. Although they are harmless to humans, it is not recommended to approach or try to catch them. Sil Janssen of the Natuurhulpcentrum in Oudsbergen points out that the birds have sharp claws and a sharp beak.
NHC staff have already made several attempts to locate and capture the animals. But that doesn’t seem to work right away. “We have to wait patiently until they weaken and land on the ground,” says Janssen. “It is impossible to do that high in the tree. They have not learned to hunt for themselves and will therefore have to land sooner or later.” Anyone who sees a white-tailed eagle should report it to the Natuurhulpcentrum in Oudsbergen.
