Stellantis Vehicle Production in Italy Declines: Future Estimates Disappointing

If in 2023 Stellantis produced 751 thousand vehicles, including cars and vans, in Italy, for the end of 2024 the estimate is much lower: just over 630 thousand. The objective, as per the government’s request and the challenge taken up by CEO Carlos Tavares of reaching one million units, remains in the book of dreams. The data relating to the first quarter, from the Fim-Cisl analysis, do not promise anything good. In all, compared to 2023, factories churned out 9.8% fewer vehicles. For machines alone the drop is greater: -23.8% or 105,255 units. The Atessa sites (vans of the Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Vauxhall and soon also Toyota brands) and Pomigliano d’Arco, thanks to the Fiat Panda (+45% production, alongside now from the Pandina version). The Alfa Romeo Tonale and the American variant Dodge Hornet are declining in the Campania factory (-9.5%).

The other Stellantis plants are in deep red with production halved. And not due to the incentives announced and not yet valid. What weighs heavily is the lack of new products that are accessible and meet the needs of the general public. Mirafiori: -51% and only 12,580 cars produced between the electric Fiat 500 (11,360), in heavy braking, and the Maseratis (1,320, first with 5 models now down to 2: GT and GC). In 2017 alone, at the time of FCA, the Trident built over 15 thousand vehicles in the Turin hub. New entries? Nothing new, given that Stellantis postponed the arrival of the new electric Quattroporte from ’25 to ’28, while the heir to the Levante, also battery-powered and announced in 2027, could be located elsewhere.

Strong fears in Modena, the home of Maserati: only 105 MC20s in three months (-68.2%), awaiting the Folgore (electric) version from which no particular shocks are expected.

Cassino also performed badly (-40.7%), i.e. 8,540 units (from 153,263 in the ’17 quarter) with Alfa Romeo Stelvio leading the way (52%), followed by Maserati Grecale (28%) and Alfa Giulia (21%) . In ’25 the new Stelvio and Giulia will be electric only, according to the latest confirmations from the company. A decision that could be revised – as happened with the Fiat 600 and Jeep Avenger, which were battery-only at their debut and then joined by hybrid and petrol versions – based on the market. Melfi is also suffering (-51%) while waiting for the 5 new models, announced as electric only, by ’26, with an estimated production of 260 thousand units per year. The good thing is that the platforms used by Stellantis can also be programmed on other engines. Furthermore, in Melfi, the life of two former FCAs was extended, the Fiat 500X (until mid-’25) and the Jeep Renegade (until the end of ’26). As was done in Pomigliano also for the Panda, whose production will continue until ’27 and perhaps even beyond.

«Europe – comments the new Fim-Cisl leader, Ferdinando Uliano – must implement a social sustainability policy more forcefully, particularly in producing countries, as we have had positions taken on the transition by governments that have no their perimeters national productions and, therefore, the decisions have a less important social weight.

In states such as Italy, Germany or Poland the change entails an effect on employment which is estimated at 30% also in the assembly areas”.
