Stellantis Technical Director Addresses Excessive Weight of Modern Cars and Introduces the STLA SmartCockpit

Stellantis technical director Ned Couric expressed his frustration with the excessive weight of the new cars. In an interview, he said that he believes the excessive weight of modern cars is the biggest problem facing the industry.

“I’m saddened by how heavy cars have become,” says the CTO, adding: “It’s bad for the environment, it’s bad for resources, it’s bad for efficiency.” Couric also says he has tasked his development team with reducing the weight of cars.

“If we’re going for sustainable development, we really need to solve the weight problem. We say we want to leave this planet in the best shape, but we, as an industry, are still adding weight to cars,” he adds.

“Yes, it disappoints me that all our cars are generally too heavy. Because of this, their price becomes prohibitive for the middle class. In general, we need to remove this type of cost from the system,” the top manager added.

In addition to excessive weight, many modern drivers complain that new cars are too complicated and uncomfortable to drive. With the introduction of the Stellantis STLA SmartCockpit, the director hopes to get rid of that counterintuitive feeling.

“All the cars on the market today, with the exception of a few, are extremely complex,” Couric explains, adding that “it’s very important to focus on eliminating unnecessary steps to make something simple and natural. “

The company’s SmartCockpit will launch in 2024 with software capable of offering services and content tailored to the user’s needs. Simplifying the functions and interface of the car is of great importance to the car manufacturer. Smart software is one way to change that, but the CTO doesn’t want it to be the focus of the company’s cars.

“I’m still a firm believer that you have to make an amazing car, and the software has to make it even more amazing,” Couric concluded the interview, saying that Stellantis won’t be trying to win over buyers with electronics alone.
