Stellantis is the sixth world group

DOWN TWO POSITIONS – In 2020 the group Stellantis it did not formally exist yet, as the merger between FCA and PSA officially took place in January 2021. So the sales numbers and the income statements must remain separate for last year. But, waiting for the official data to be released (March 3), Car Industry Analisys anticipated some numbers revealing that in the 2020 the Stellantis group fell two places in the global manufacturer ranking, overtaken by General Motors and Hyundai Motor Group (see Car Industry Analysis drawing below).

“Fault” of PSA – Specifically, the combined sales of FCA and PSA totaled 6,206,000 units in 2020, scoring a 22% drop compared to the 2019 figures, when the units amounted to 7,907,000 (volumes that would have placed Stellantis in fourth place). Most of the decline recorded by Stellantis in 2020 is due to PSA, which recorded a contraction of 27%, which nevertheless allowed to deliver 2.52 million cars, or 41% of the total of the new group in 2020. The FCA’s volume fell 18% with a total of 3.68 million units sold.

FCA’s performance was in line with the industry average (-14%), similar to that of some of the manufacturers in the global top 10. The strong presence in North America helped offset the large declines in Brazil and Europe. The same cannot be said for PSA, 85% of whose sales come from the Old Continent.

THE BRANDS – The Jeep is the most successful brand of the Stellantis group, thanks to 1.23 million units delivered in 2020, down by 17%. A la follows Fiat, which delivered 1.15 million vehicles in 2020, down 15%. Third the Peugeot with 1.12 million units with a decrease of 22% as a consequence of the 55% contraction recorded in China and 24% in Europe. Peugeot did pretty well with SUVs, but posted losses in the compact segments in both Europe and China.

THE THREE PREMIUMS – L’Alfa Romeo was the best brand in the premium hub of the Stellantis group, which also includes DS, Maserati and Lancia. At 46,900 units, its volume was down 30%, less than the 37% drop recorded by the Maserati which delivered only 17,000 cars. There DS with 47,000 units (-16% compared to a year earlier) it slightly precedes the Lancia, which found 43,100 customers for its only model, the Ypsilon, down 27%.

CITROËN E OPEL – Among the French bad too Citroën, which suffered from competition from other European brands in compact SUVs, and was able to find 722,000 new customers, down 27%, while the German Opel it lost 34% totaling 635,000 cars.

THE AMERICANS – Looking at the American brands of the Stellantis group, the Chrysler contained the decline to -11%, registering the lowest contraction of all brands, but is now down to a flicker with only 122,000 units sold. Also there Ram, the brand specializing in pick-ups, recorded a slight decline of 12% but was able to sell 743,600 units.

The Dodge it was the most affected house in the group. Its sales fell 38% to just 312,400 units, the lowest result since the 1980s. The brand announced the end of production of the Dodge Journey and Caravan, reducing its portfolio to just three products available.

THE ASIAN CHALLENGE – The Stellantis to grow must absolutely become competitive in China and increase its presence in Asian markets. The new group in fact sold only 111,300 vehicles in 2020, with a market share of 0.4%.
