(Reuters) – Stellantis and Samsung SDI announced on Wednesday the construction of their second joint battery factory for electric vehicles in the state of Indiana in the United States, for an investment of 3.2 billion dollars (3.02 billion euros).
With this second factory, the Starplus Energy Gigafactory, should reach a combined annual production capacity of 67 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2027, Stellantis said in a press release.
Samsung SDI said last month it wanted to invest 2.7 billion won (189.64 billion euros) in the project, already launched by the construction of a first joint factory whose production should start in the first quarter of 2025.
This announcement is part of Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, which plans to cease production of thermal engines for passenger vehicles in Europe by 2030. In the United States, it targets 50% of passenger vehicles and pick-ups at the same time. due date.
