Stellantis and Samsung plan to build a second battery factory for electric cars in the United States, the two groups announced on Monday.
The Franco-Italian-American car manufacturer and the South Korean battery manufacturer are currently building a first “gigafactory” in Kokomo, Indiana, for an investment of between $2.5 billion and $3.1 billion.
Its launch is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025, with an initial annual production capacity of 33 gigawatt-hours (GWh).
The second plant, whose location has yet to be specified, should start in 2027 with a similar annual production capacity of 34 GWh, the two groups announced in a press release.
It would be able to equip hundreds of thousands of cars from the group’s brands (Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep).
The group wants to sell 50% electric cars in the United States by 2030, with 25 new vehicle launches planned. The company therefore intends to ensure the availability of “about 400 GWh of battery capacity” over this period.
To compete with other major manufacturers who have presented ambitious electric roadmaps, Stellantis has announced that it wants to invest 30 billion euros in total by 2025 in its electrification and in its software.
The group opened its first battery factory in late May in northern France, and plans to build five more in total, including three in North America. A plant is under construction in Ontario, Canada and is expected to start production in 2024.
Samsung SDI, the battery and electronic equipment subsidiary of the Korean giant, has “laid a solid foundation to mark (its) presence in North America”, declared its president Yoon-Ho Choi. “This second plant will allow us to accelerate our deployment in the American market and will help Stellantis to advance the transition of the United States to the era of the electric vehicle”.
