The German president warned his Russian counterpart that “the power of democracy should not be underestimated.”
Frank-Walter Steinmeier, re-elected President of Germany for a second term, called on the head of the Russian state, Vladimir Putin, to urgently begin a peaceful settlement of the conflict over Ukraine. The German politician made the corresponding statement on Sunday, February 13, after his re-election by the Federal Assembly.
“I appeal to President Putin. Loosen the noose around the neck of Ukraine, look with us for a path that will keep peace in Europe,” Steinmeier stressed.
The German President warned of the seriousness of the threat: “We are in danger (associated with the possibility – Ed.) of a military conflict, a war in Eastern Europe.” “Russia bears responsibility for this,” he stressed.
Steinmeier to Putin: Don’t underestimate the power of democracy
“I can only warn President Putin: don’t underestimate the power of democracy,” Frank-Walter Steinmeier further pointed out.
According to the former head of the German Foreign Ministry, “an increase in the number of Russian troops” near the borders of Ukraine cannot be misinterpreted. “This is a threat to Ukraine,” and that’s how it was intended, he is sure.
However, the population of Ukraine has “the right to live without fear and threats”, the right “to self-determination and sovereignty,” the President of Germany stressed. To those who try to destroy it, “we will give a decisive answer,” Steinmeier concluded.
Re-election as President of Germany
Politician February 13 was re-elected to the presidency of Germany for a second term. An overwhelming number of members of the Federal Assembly voted for his candidacy. 1,045 out of 1,425 valid votes were cast in support, 86 assembly members abstained, and another 294 voted for other candidates.
