According to the publication, Steinmeier’s office explained the cancellation of the visit for “security reasons”.
“While the federal president is canceling his visit, there are many foreign diplomats and guests who want to show their presence in the capital right now,” a Ukrainian government spokesman told Bild.
The publication writes that the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Interior and the German security authorities have advised Steinmeier not to travel to Kiev. However, the visit is expected to take place in the near future.
It was also reported that the arrival of the German president was coordinated for several weeks.
It should be noted that in the spring it became known that the Ukrainian side refused to visit Steinmeier, which led to long-term disagreements between Kiev and Berlin. In the summer, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sent an invitation to the German president. The prehistory of the diplomatic conflict was his unsuccessful policy of him as German foreign minister towards Russia, when he advocated the preservation of partnerships.
After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he publicly admitted his mistakes.
