The building application for the upgrading of the bicycle connection including the redesign of the Rheinbrückstrasse is open

The cross-border project should be completed by the end of the year. The path that leads to the wooden bridge is to be expanded to 2.90 meters for pedestrians and cyclists.

With the project of the bicycle connection between the Steiner train station and the one in Bad Säckingen, the Steiner local council is on the home straight. In June 2019, the sovereign approved a loan of CHF 350,000 for this purpose. The building application for the renovation of Rheinbrückstrasse – a section of the bicycle connection – is now open.

A permit would not only entail the renewal of the Rheinbrückstrasse. Also included in the planning application is the upgrading of the entire bike connection – from the train station via Friedhofweg, Schulstrasse, Münchwilerstrasse and Rheinbrückstrasse to the wooden bridge – with markings, signage and milestones. The costs for this, including the redesign of Rheinbrückstrasse, amount to 622,000 francs.

Roland Gröflin, Head of Division and Planning, says:

“We want to complete the project by the end of the year – provided there are no delays in terms of approval.”

While the upgrading measures along the bicycle connection should be completed sooner, according to Gröflin it is important to finish the work on the road before winter sets in.

“Climate oasis” planned at the confluence with Rheinbrückstrasse

Specifically, the approximately 60 centimeter wide sidewalk with the entire road surface is to be dismantled in Rheinbrückstrasse and then expanded to 2.90 meters. “We want to make the route more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists.” In any case, there is a driving ban on Rheinbrückstrasse with the exception of residents, feeders and visitors.

The redesign of the street links the community with the Climate Oasis campaign. At the fountain in front of the “Mikado” on Schaffhauserstrasse, for example, the pavement is to be replaced by marl and a silver linden tree will decorate the entrance to Rheinbrückstrasse. Community clerk Sascha Roth says:

“We want to counteract the heating of the living space through the planting and the natural surface.”

On the bicycle connection itself, bicycle signs in yellow are attached at junctions, which serve as orientation for the riders. The cross-border character of the project is taken into account with signs along the route, which are also placed on the German side in the same optics and bear the “Velo Love” logo.

In addition, milestones are set up along the route; Concrete blocks that offer seating and provide information about the place where you are currently via the attached board. Another three service points are planned. For example on Steiner Bahnhofsweg, as Gröflin says. “Cyclists can do minor repairs there.”

The start of the renovation of the Fridolin Bridge is still dragging on

As part of the upgrading measures for the bicycle connection, the cross-border bike sharing project with 20 to 30 e-bikes will start in April / May. For this purpose, a bypass route via Zürcherstrasse and Schaffhauserstrasse is planned, which enables e-bike riders to cross the Fridolinsbrücke and customs.

A possible solution for bike guidance is currently being examined between the canton and the German authorities, says Simone Britschgi, spokeswoman for the canton’s Department of Construction, Transport and Environment. Because of this, the renovation of the bridge would not begin until 2022.
