Stefanos Tsitsipas committed to making a significant donation to the Acapulco Mexican Open in the midst of a delicate situation in the country. A few months ago, Mexicans suffered the devastation caused by Hurricane Otis, which left 52 dead and damages estimated at more than 22 million dollars. For this reason, it was a challenge for the organization to guarantee the celebration of the ATP 500, which involved an investment of more than 12 million dollars and the support of 35 companies.
The tournament runs from February 26 to March 2, 2024 and features a star-studded main draw, with eight players in the top 15, including one of the local favorites, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (No. 11). The runner-up of the 2021 tournament expressed his excitement upon arriving in Acapulco at a difficult time: “It’s something we didn’t expect after the tragedy a few months ago,” said the two-time Grand Slam finalist.
“It makes me happy that so many people came together and made this possible to return everything to this beautiful city of Acapulco. I am here with my tennis to give the best I can to the communities,” added Stefanos Tsitispas.
The Greek made an important announcement for the Mexican community by pledging to donate for every ace he achieves during this week of the tournament: “I am going to donate $1,000 for every ace I make this week in Acapulco, and they will be transferred to the aid program for Acapulco in 2024,” declared the former world number 3.
In his last appearance in Acapulco, the Greek was eliminated in the semifinals against Cameron Norrie and had 21 aces in four matches. In 2021, he was a finalist behind Alexander Zverev and also achieved 21 aces, although on that occasion in five matches.
