Stefanos Tsitsipas did not get past the second round of the US Open. The seventh-seeded Greek had to acknowledge his superior in five sets in the Swiss Dominic Stricker. It became 7-5 6-7 (2) 6-7 (5) 7-6 (6) 6-3 for the number 128 in the world, who had qualified for the main draw in New York.
Tsitsipas was allowed to serve for the match in the fourth set with a 5-3 lead. Stricker, however, managed to win the service game against the Greek and force a tiebreak not much later. He won the tiebreak 8-6, after which he immediately took a 3-0 lead in the fifth set. He never gave up that lead.
The game lasted 4 hours and 4 minutes. The 21-year-old Stricker finished it off with a forehand down the line, then lay stretched out on the court.
Tsitsipas has never performed well at the US Open, the last grand slam tournament of the year. Last year he already lost in the opening round. His best result in New York is a place in the third round.
Tsitsipas, who had won convincingly against Milos Raonic in the first round, had a moderate run-up to the tournament in New York. He was also quickly eliminated at the masters tournaments in Cincinnati and Toronto.
