The president of SYRIZA-PS, Stefanos Kasselakis, met with the mothers of the three young victims of the recent traffic accident in BOAK, at the Chania hospital, where the fourth occupant of the vehicle, 22-year-old Maria, is being treated. After the meeting, Stefanos Kasselakis made the following statement to the media, from the offices of NE Chania:
“I am shocked by what I have heard. This is a question of justice, in the face of what these families experienced, which is a combination of labor exploitation of their children and criminal government responsibility for BOAK. And it is good to call a spade a spade. It is not possible for there to be children, especially minors, 15 years old, at an event at the wedding of political actors and no one speaks. Currently, families are unable to find witnesses, for fear of reprisals, to say when their children left the workplace. Children arriving at 12 noon and leaving at 3:00 and 5:00 in the morning. Girl who is currently in the ICU, arrived at three in the afternoon and called her mother at 8:00 in the morning that she was leaving work. And all this for 80 euros per day. This is the daily wage of children killed in a carniola, which is BOAK.
We cannot tolerate this situation. This country can’t be merciless, whether it’s for the kids in this car crash, or for the kids in Tempe. At some point we must wake up and understand that failure is not the fate of the Greek people. There are responsibilities both state and of course from those employers who take advantage of these poor children who are trying to earn a living wage. If I were at such an event, where I understand the prime minister was also, and I saw young children at the service, I would ask, “how old are you?”. Fifteen year old kids were there. Nobody asked? Will that be hooded too? Will the families find out that these children allegedly went to a festival afterwards?”
Mr. Kasselakis calls on those “who have knowledge of this specific case to speak. To be witnesses on the side of the families of these victims and at the same time there should be no cover-up, neither by material that may exist from cameras, nor by people who have knowledge of this fact. It is unacceptable that Theodoris, who was killed, is not entitled to funeral expenses from this state because he did not have enough honors as a student”.
Mr. Kasselakis also refers to the internal parties of SYRIZA, saying: “The other issues that concern public opinion, about intra-party disagreements and so on, are meaningless in front of what is at stake in our country. It is time to realize, each and every one of us, that we have a responsibility towards the citizens who have trusted us. It could be your child in that car. If you come from a family that is not affluent, it is very likely that it will be your child. Social equality, social justice, empathy, are values that befit the modern Left, and I pledge that the party, which has honored me in the position I am in, will rise to the occasion and fight for these children. And I call on all of you to stand by their side.”
